Scripture
Matthew 9:14-17 , Lev. 23:27-28, Ex/ 23:19, Jer. 31:31-34, Luke 5:39, Phil 1:7-8
What to Believe:
Matt. 9:14 reveals that the Jews had developed a tradition of fasting that was more than required in the Old Testament. They fasted twice a week as an “act of righteousness” seeking atonement of sin, as mourning for sin.
Matt. 9:15–Jesus reminds them that fasting associated with mourning isn’t necessary during a celebration. The presence of Jesus is a reason to celebrate!
Matt. 9:16–Don’t put an old man-made tradition of fasting and attach it to the new covenant Jesus was revealing. Jer 31:31-34 was a promise about this new covenant.
Matt 9:17–New wine in old wineskins-Skins are made of flesh. This new covenant is made with the breaking of Jesus’ flesh, it is a new system.
How to Obey:
Luke 5:39 urges us not to stick to the old system because it is comfortable and familiar.
One mindset that you shouldn’t keep in the new system is to minimize and justify sinful actions. Jesus’ blood was shed for the atonement of those sins!
How to Walk Intimately with God:
Remember that we don’t fast to make ourselves righteous. The disciples of Jesus fast because we are longing for Him.
Ask God what old wineskins you need to put away to receive the new wine of the new covenant.
Ask for the Father’s heart for others. Remember that all miracles are an outpouring of the Father’s heart..
