The Four Horns of Zechariah – Josh Lewis

Speaker - Josh Lewis

Scripture

Zechariah 1:18-21, 1 Samual 2:10, Psalms 18:2, Psalms 75:10, Revelation 12:11, Deuteronomy 12:32, 1 John 5:19, Acts 2, Mark 6:3, Hebrews 9:11-12, Hebrews 2 14:15, Luke 10:17-20, Ephesians 2:19-22, 1 Peter 2:5-6, Romans 16:20, Revelation 12:7-12

What to Believe:

  • The visions of Zachariah are complementary to one another. To better understand one, read another. One will help bring understanding to another. It helps to read towards the end to better understand the beginning.

  • Horns can be symbolic of forces, principalities, national power, and supernatural empowerment

  • The number four is used to emphasize the totality of the earth. The four horns, four horses, and four craftsmen point to the totality or wholeness of earth.

  • In Hebrews–sister languages (Ugaritic and ancient Near Eastern magical texts) to be cast down is used exclusively about the purification of something that had been demonized and/or the expulsion of demonic powers from different places

  • The context of Zechariah to the building of the temple. The author is telling his audience that their goal is to build the temple, and there is going to be opposition, but the opposition is not against in flesh and blood. It is against principalities.

  • Christ being a craftsman or a carpenter meant much more than his occupation, but it was who He is. As those in the Old Testament built the temple, Christ in the New Testament built the church body.

  • There are three fulfillments in Zechariah:

1. A historical fulfillment

  • The craftsmen are builders, the actual of building was warfare against spirits

  • Theological 1st John 19 ( the world's powers are in the hands of the devil)

  • Promise to a man named Abraham ( his seed is to be blessed) to David ( in his line king of kings)

  • God calls his people together to build a temple

  • The people didn't care but the spirits did a place where heaven and earth meet a place where God can start fulfilling his promises

  • People have adopted a world view of the church, as the church is warfare

  • Acts 2 they were added to the church through Baptism

  • What we are doing is warfare in the church

2. Christological fulfillment

  • Jesus was a craftsmen and carpenter ( one who is to build)

  • We would need a new temple ( which Jesus built and created) for a new covenant to no longer need bulls blood for atonement

  • Hebrews 9:11-12 ( he entered once and for all inte the Holy places not by the blood of goats but of his own blood)

  • The priest would go to a brass bowl to wash after killing an animal, then go to an incense and oil area, and finally go into the Holy of holy places, and this place is a shadow of the place in heaven. all the Gold stuff is in heaven but every brass item was for purification of sins and only on earth

  • There are four horns on the wash bowl and Jesus came to tear down the horns

  • There is a new and better thing that covers our sins and by tearing down the horns it put in fear and terror in the demons and principalities of earth

3. Ecclesiastical fulfillment:

  • Judah is being rebuilt after severe destruction, it’s an act of warfare against their supernatural opposition, because the building of this church was a threat to the principalities in the land, and the temple is where Heaven meets God's people. Making this structure and those who live there a victory over the spirit of darkness.

  • It is an act of warfare to declare oneself as a follower of Christ. You are no longer under the authority of the world/death, but instead you have sided to self and breathed in the new life that Christ offers.

How to Obey:

  • Walk in the authority that God has given you. He has made you to trample the enemy beneath your feet. Do not hide or tremble when the Lord has given you the authority to step on whatever would oppose you.

  • We are created to be the temple. Jesus unified all peoples under His blood to be the church and to serve God. We are meant to live as a pleasing sacrifice to God. It is who we are. Remember that. Our lives are not our own, but instead should be lived for God and His good pleasure.

How to Walk Intimately with God:

  • God knows the end from the beginning. He knows every part of the story. He knows each step we take and each tear we cry. He knows it all, in every minute detail.
